Berry, James H. (b. 1841)

James H. Berry, of Bentonville, was born in Jackson County, Alabama, May 15, 1841; removed to Arkansas in 1848; received a limited education at a private school at Berryville, Arkansas; studied law, and was admitted to practice in 1866; entered the Confederate Army in 1861 as Second Lieutenant, Sixteenth Arkansas Infantry; lost a leg at the battle of Corinth, Mississippi, October 4, 1862; was elected to the Legislature of Arkansas in 1S66; was reelected in 1872; was elected Speaker of the House at the extraordinary session of 1874; was President of the Democratic State Convention in 1876; was elected Judge of the Circuit Court in 1878; was elected Governor in 1882; was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat, to succeed Hon. A. H. Garland, appointed Attorney-General, and took his seat March 25, 1885. His term of service will expire March 3, 1889.
