James was born on February 25, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio to Daisy Gilmore Taylor and Russell Gould Backus. Later in life, he was known as Jim Backus.
James passed away on July 3, 1989 in Santa Monica, California. He was laid to rest in the Westwood Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California.
